A gifted young pianist from Hong Kong has been awarded the first ABRSM scholarship for students at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). Seventeen-year-old Andy Chung Hok-chun began his undergraduate studies at the Academy's School of Music at the beginning of September and will receive funding via the ABRSM scholarship for all four years of the course. Chung, who was previously a student on the HKAPA's Junior Music Programme, counts Rachmanioff, Prokofiev and Mozart among his favourite composers. Chung will study with the Academy's Head of Keyboard Studies, Professor Gabriel Kwok. ABRSM already provides scholarships for students at four of the Royal Schools of Music in the UK, but this is the first time we have offered a scholarship at a conservatoire elsewhere. Our HKAPA scholarship was established to mark 60 years of ABRSM exams in Hong Kong and celebrates our close ties with the local music education community. The award will be available annually to any young musician from Hong Kong – pianist, instrumentalist or singer – auditioning for an undergraduate place at the HKAPA, and shows the seriousness of ABRSM's ongoing support for music making in Hong Kong.
