ABRSM announces its 2014 teacher conference

ABRSM, the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music, is delighted to announce details of an exciting and immersive conference for teachers of all instruments and levels. With a focus on ABRSM’s new Piano syllabus, it will also offer thought-provoking ideas for developing the all-round musician across a range of instrumental and vocal specialisms, and explore the significant role the revised ABRSM marking criteria can play in supporting effective teaching and learning. The event will be held at London’s Grange Hotel, Tower Hill on 18 October and programme and booking information can be found at www.abrsm.org/conference. ‘Each year the atmosphere at our conference is remarkable. With more than 500 teachers expected this year, we hope to provide a day of thought-provoking, inspiring and engaging presentations and workshops.’ said Leslie East, Chief Executive at ABRSM. ‘Those attending – drawn from the private, state and independent education sectors – are given a great opportunity to hear a wealth of new and innovative teaching ideas – many of which can be incorporated directly into their own teaching strategies.’ Those presenting at the event include ABRSM’s Chief Examiner John Holmes, who will explore musical progression and the role of assessment, and pianist and ABRSM examiner Anthony Williams, who will look at the strengths of rhythm, articulation and tempo and the subtleties of tone, balance and rubato at the piano. Jessica O'Leary, violinist and ABRSM examiner, will look at how to achieve a distinctive performance. Teachers of all instruments and levels will find lots to interest them and other presenters include ABRSM’s Director of Strategic Development Lincoln Abbotts; flautist and educator Louise Matthew; percussionist and educator Rob Farrer; bassist and educator Tom Hewins; flautist and educator Ian Judson; jazz trumpeter and composer Mark Armstrong; composer and educator Alexander L’Estrange and singer and educator Heidi Pegler. Attendance at the event costs just £75 per delegate, including refreshments and lunch. A full conference programme and booking facility can be found at www.abrsm.org/conference.
